COREbeat: Driving mining efficiency through predictive maintenance

Use cases in MASTERMINE and COREbeat installation

By CORE Innovation Centre (CORE IC)

In the dynamic world of mining, where operations hinge on the reliability of critical equipment, the importance of predictive maintenance cannot be overstated. It's a proactive approach that revolutionizes the traditional reactive maintenance model, ushering in a new era of efficiency and safety. MASTERMINE, not only recognizes the significance of sovereignty in mines but also introduces the AUTOMINE module, which incorporates Smart Predictive Maintenance (Smart PdM) as a cornerstone for operational autonomy.

What is predictive maintenance?

Predictive maintenance employs proactive strategies leveraging data analysis and machine learning algorithms to forecast equipment failures in advance. This approach is pivotal for mines as it helps minimise downtime, optimise productivity, and lower maintenance costs.

In a mining environment, numerous assets, including dewatering pumps, ventilation fans, and electric motors, are critical to overall operations. By integrating smart predictive maintenance systems customized for specific use cases, such as monitoring pump units and detecting vehicle component wear, productivity can be maximised. Moreover, timely detection of equipment failures can mitigate potential risks, enhancing operational efficiency and safety.

CORE IC’s contribution to MASTERMINE

Within the MASTERMINE project, CORE Innovation Centre (CORE IC) emerges as a key player entrusted with designing and implementing smart predictive maintenance solutions. CORE IC’s expertise lies in deploying cutting-edge Machine Learning (ML) models and installing the COREbeat platform across mines to TERNA MAG (Greece), THARSIS (Spain), TAPOJÄRVI (Finland) and the replication pilot of SIBANYE-STILLWATER in South Africa.

COREbeat is an all-in-one predictive maintenance platform designed to achieve continuous improvement to operating assets. The platform brings together sensor devices, cloud and edge computation technology, and a user interface. COREbeat harnesses vibration data to accurately monitor asset behaviour, predict failures, and maximise the health of industrial machines.

The philosophy of smart predictive maintenance with COREbeat aims to bring significant benefits to manufacturing operations. By leveraging advanced algorithms tested across various industrial settings, it effectively eliminates unexpected breakdowns, reducing failure rates by 15-25% and increasing uptime by 10-20%. Moreover, the focus on enhancing machine reliability extends their useful life, contributing to a 5-10% increase in system reliability. This translates to reduced maintenance costs as increased uptimes and eliminated downtimes result in higher Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Times to Failure (MTTF), ultimately leading to a 5-10% reduction in maintenance expenses.
