Joint mining cluster: Forging a path towards sustainable and digital mining
By Stavroula Panagiotidou (STRATAGEM)
The MASTERMINE project, along with seven other projects that share a common goal of developing innovative solutions for sustainable raw material production and mining practices, convened online on May 22, 2023, to discuss the possibility of forming a joint cluster. The meeting, skillfully organized and managed by the illuMINEation project, saw representatives from each project engaging in fruitful discussions, delving into the structure, primary objectives, challenges, and lessons learned from their respective initiatives. Participants identified potential opportunities for collaboration and assigned specific tasks to enhance effective teamwork. By joining forces, these projects aim to collectively propel their initiatives forward and achieve significant progress in their respective fields.
The participating EU projects and their respective focuses are as follows:
ROBOMINERS: Aims to develop a bio-inspired, modular & reconfigurable robot-miner for small & difficult to access deposits.
IlluMINEation: Focuses on laying the foundations for a holistic digital transformation of Europe’s mining industry.
DIGIECOQUARRY: Its vision is to tap into the full potential of “Digital Quarries” through a significant breakthrough in process digitalisation and automation capabilities for the aggregates sector.
SUMEX: Aims to establish a sustainability framework for the extractive industry in Europe.
Digit: Plans to develop a human-centred Internet of Things platform for the sustainable digital mine of the future.
ROTATE: Focuses on environmental solutions that will contribute to facilitating the generation of synergies between diverse industrial sectors related to mining and quarrying.
Sea4Value: Focuses on seawater brines as a new source for the sustainable mining of raw materials.
